Eco Club 16/9/11
Present: Mrs Oliver, Mrs Currie, Mrs Adams, Mrs Bryce, Mrs Ednie, Mrs Monachello, Iain, Jordan, Barnaby, Abigail, Sam, Robbie, Andrew, David, Rebecca, Connie and Ronan.
1. Bat survey: This was carried out in the evening of Friday 9th September by Rebecca, Connie, Mrs Oliver and Mrs Currie assisted by Niall Currie from SNH St. Cyrus. It showed that although the maternal roost at the Art Dept is now empty there are pipistrelles in the area, possibly roosting in the Sports Centre.
2. Andy Turner: Police wildlife protection officer has offered to return to do more on wildlife crime and trapping in the near future.
3. Energy Audit: Now that Caspar Lampkin is back from his travels we hope to get him back helping us progress with looking at energy use in school and ways to reduce consumption as this is an essential component in our reassessment for the Green Flag award renewal in January.
4. St. Cyrus trip: There is the possibility of a Saturday or Sunday trip to make bat boxes and bird boxes which we could take back to use around the school.
5. New school: The recommendations put forward by the Eco Club are: solar tubes to heat water, water butts to collect rain water, a pitched roof to allow water runoff, using grey water to flush toilets, water fountains in every teaching area, a dining room with adequate seating for everyone buying lunch so that real plates and cutlery were used and reused, pre-ordering of meals using a push-button machine, a swipe card system to pay for meals, triple glazing, windows which open to allow ventilation (and not too much glass for overheating/overcooling ), motion sensors for lighting, fans in toilets and heating, Scandinavian levels of insulation, inside seating for social areas, roof garden and greenhouse, underground car parking, separate parking for buses, away from cars for safety, outside covered areas for pupils, cycle racks, a bike workshop, a climbing wall, a recycling area within the school, vegetable plots, a polytunnel with ventilation sections, a pond and wild area for biodiversity, an outside seating area, a wind turbine, and a S.U.D. for collecting water. It was also thought essential that pupils currently at the network primary schools were consulted as they are the ones who will be using the facilities in the new school.
